Soil Health 101: Grow More Good Workshop Series 5 of 6

  • The Community Classroom at Sola Gratia Farm 2200 Philo Rd Urbana, Illinois United States (map)

Soil Health 101

Here’s a throwback to your high school biology class:

Autotroph (producer): an organism that makes their own food by converting inorganic materials into organic energy, typically using sunlight (photosynthesis). Example: all the plants in your garden!

Heterotroph (consumer): organisms that cannot make their own food and must survive by eating or absorbing other organisms (or their byproducts). Example: you, your family, friends, and community that eat healthy fruits and veggies from your garden!

Why does this matter? The plants in your garden make their own food by taking up inorganic materials from their environment (AKA nutrients from the soil) in order produce enough energy to grow to a harvestable stage in your garden. Hopefully this emphasizes the importance of good soil health.

In this workshop, we’ll talk about the pros and cons of tilling, what you can learn from a soil test, how to amend your soil if there is a deficiency, and the importance of cover cropping.

Registration is required. The cost of this workshop is $5, though scholarships are available for anyone who needs one. Email scholarship requests to info@solagratiacsa.com - All are welcome!

This workshop will take place outdoors at The Community Classroom at Sola Gratia Farm. It is strongly recommended to wear closed-toed shoes and sun protection. Standing and walking on potentially uneven surfaces is standard at our workshop series, so please reach out to us with any mobility concerns and we will do everything we can do accommodate you!
